After graduating in Computational Linguistics at the University of Pisa in 1989, Michele Carenini worked for the Department of Linguistics and the Institute for Computational Linguistics (National Research Council) in Pisa. In 1991 he set up AITech, a spin-off company specialising in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence applications. In 1996 he moved to Omega Generation, Bologna, eventually becoming R&D Manager (1999). From 1998 to 2004 he has been a lecturer in NLP and AI at the Department of Psychology at the University of Bologna. In 2004 he joined the School of Informatics of the University of Edinburgh (UK) as Business Development Executive. In September 2005 he joined NoemaLife SpA as International Business Development Manager. Recent coordinated projects include ICT-2007-216134 REMINE (“High Performance Prediction, Detection and Monitoring Platform for Patient Safety Risk Management”, focusing on prediction and identification of clinical risk through multimedia data mining), and IST 224635 VPH2 – “Virtual Pathological Heart of the Virtual Physiological Human”, design and development of computational models of the heart for the definition of seriousness and extension of pathology in post-ischemic patients, and design and development of decision/planning supporting systems for diagnostic and surgical treatment). Since 1992 he has been a member of the Society for Machines and Mentality. He is a Reviewer for IEEE Computer Society. He has published a number of scientific papers in national and international journals, a book about Natural Language Semantics and one on Philosophy of Mind.
